Home Learning Week 4 - Subject/Predicate, Squash, Mint/Calendula Face Mask

I enjoy home schooling a lot but sometimes Mom is too strict. She seriously is. She makes me do work when I don't feel like it.

This homework is from my teacher at VLC. I am learning about sentences. It is easy and hard. Every sentence has a subject and a predicate. The subject is the "main something" of the sentence. A predicate is about the something; it's what the something does or has or is.

We can mix subjects and predicates and make some funny sentences.

This is from my Victoria teacher. I am sorting sounds to help me spell. This is short "a" and long "a". It is too easy. I did it in grade 1.

This is the fun part about home schooling! I am covering kitchen waste to make compost in our new veggie garden. Digging is very good for your body.

Female squash blossoms have "balls" on them; the male ones don't - they have the pollen. The female one waits until it pops open and is fertilized by the pollen. The ball will die if it is not pollinated. The squash I fertilized is getting bigger.

I am cutting calendula and mint so I can make a face mask. It is easy to clip calendula flowers.

We blended them with yoghurt and cucumber.

Mom and I made up the recipe. We thought it would look like diarrhea and we were right!

I liked it when it was in the blender, but not on my face. At first it felt refreshing, but then it didn't. I didn't like the colour or the smell or the scratchy texture. Lush ones are better than ours - they have a good smell and nice colour and smooth texture. I'm not complaining. This is all true. We're going to keep trying to make a better one.

Basic machine and hand sewing skills, serging, hand basting, French seams, elastic application, zipper application, turning corners, how to darn holes and sew on buttons

Home Learning - Week 3 - Apple Taste Test, Gymnastics, Back Brace, Subtraction

Andrew can tell math is getting easier for me. I am subtracting.

I took a spelling pre-test.

I went to the orthodontist.

Next time Dr. Chung is going to take my braces and spacer out - I am excited to chew gum again! I want to have a party with Carlo - he's a good one to celebrate with, because of his smile. He's always happy to see me. Right?

I am learning to do a hand stand in gymnastics...

and to walk on the balance beam.

Bear walking is easy.

Gymnastics is near my old house - I don't like the colour they painted it because I liked it blue. It makes me upset to look at it, but I want to drive by it because I like the house. I wish we lived there still, but we never will again.

We did an apple taste test. I loved the ambrosia apple. I hated the empire apple. Mom liked the honeycrisp. Apples make us burp. What's wrong with us!!?

This is a sugar plum. It smells exactly like my sugar plum smelly marker. I ate the whole thing. I mean the plum!

My brace is making my back straight. Scoliosis means your back is not straight and it will really hurt if you don't wear a brace, and you might have to have surgery. I wear it the whole day, except for  a break. It is painful, but I like the colour of it.

I did my homework while I waited for Serap to check my new brace.

Then I had a rest.

Later, I met some home schooling kids at the library and made a dream catcher. A dream catcher catches your bad dreams. I saw my old friend, Aidan.

Mom showed me how to make a bag from a t-shirt. I like it.

Our garden plot is growing grass! Is it from the horse manure?

I helped pollinate a squash flower. 

Oregano smells good. Put it in the oven. Turn off the heat. In the morning it will be dry.

One jar is for my dad.

We made salsa with it: tomatoes, onion, cilantro, oregano, chilli pepper, salt, lime.

We ate it with quesadillas. You can eat squash blossoms. I don't like them.

I went on a recycling treasure hunt: I saw a hilarious wallet, made from a milk carton.

The shelf is made from a plastic carton. I didn't notice there was a bug there.

We saw this lamp made from a cardboard box.

This homemade dog food was disgusting, but it was healthy for the dog - Cooper - that we met today. We went for a walk. I gave him a treat - I don't know what flavour, but I know it was a dog treat, not a human treat, for sure.

I am exhausted. I want to play on my tablet now. Yeah, exactly. Good-bye, You-tubers! Ha ha ha! (What's wrong with me?!)

This is what I did this week at home schooling:

I am working on Math Playground to learn Big Girl Math - adding and subtracting.

I am learning about money: our garden kiosk made $19 this week. We are going to buy a rose plant that smells good.
We are giving the bluebell bulbs away for free because we have no room for them in our garden.

We made a fruit fly trap from vinegar and dish soap. We don't have a fruit fly problem anymore.

I wrote a thank you card to Paulo and mailed it to the transfer station.

I am curious about albino animals. I think they are cool. We researched it and made a mind map.

We made chai from scratch and I wrote the recipe.

50 peppercorns and one chilli pepper are the secret ingredients.

We found two big slugs in the garden. We made a house for them, but they escaped overnight.
We also found a dead beetle. We put it in a jar for later.

We sorted tools. There were three kinds of screwdrivers, but they were all different sizes. 

We made pizza. It was super good. We ate it outside because it was sunny.

I am learning to keyboard. We posted our old toddler bed rails for free on Craigslist, and I did all the typing. I hope somebody wants them.

Skating lessons start on Sunday. We bought new skates with pink skate guards. I saw a vampire skating costume. This is not it.

After school I like to colour. Always ask permission before sitting on a cow.

Home schooling is a lot of work, but it's good.

First Day of Home Learning - Grade 4

September 7, 2016

Yesterday was my first day of home schooling. This is what we did:

We made a smoothie with blueberries, apple, banana, chia, flax seed and kale from our garden. I made up the recipe, and wrote it down. It got five stars, but the colour was a little bad.

We have a little store to learn about money. Somebody bought our flowers, but they took our Mexican vase! I made a new sign that says, "Please don't take our vase!"

We learned about recycling plastic. Rigid plastic, like milk containers, goes in the blue bin. Soft plastic, like plastic bags, goes to the transfer station.

We went to the transfer station to take our styrofoam and extra plastic bags. The transfer station is where the garbage trucks take our garbage, before it goes on huge trucks to the landfill. It is near the Lush factory, so it smells kind of good and kind of bad.

You can take metal things to the transfer station to be recycled, too.

Paolo gave me a gift from his museum of things he found in the garbage.

It is an old fashioned doll's stove. He said, "Cherish it." Cherish means take good care of it, and remember that it is special. My mom is going to clean it. We shouldn't plug it in.

Then we went to buy some compost for our veggie garden project. The compost was steaming.

We put the compost in our garden and mixed it with soil and horse manure. Then we watered it. We are getting it ready for the Spring. We are going to grow corn, watermelon, catnip and sunflowers. We are going to make pickled watermelon.

Then I played with new home schooling friends at the beach. They were friendly.
We are going to do science experiments together.
We gave our new friends a ride home, and then we went to the library.

It was a good day.
